There is no hell so I don’t need to be saved from it. Game over.
Well, actually Jesus taught that there is a hell and mankind, Satan and the angles that follow him are going there.
If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.
And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.
A good question to ask next then is why is there a hell? What is its purpose?
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Heaven is said to have been created for the righteous. Hell was created for all who rebel against God, starting with Satan and the angels who followed him in his rebellion and then all mankind which rebel against God. The fire of hell was prepared for the devil and his angels, after their fall (whenever in time past that it occurred): and because wicked men partake with devils in their sin of rebellion against God, they are doomed to share with them in their punishment. After all, sin is active rebellion against God by purposely missing the mark of God’s law. The wages of sin are death. Wages are earned by action as well as by attitudes.
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
The image is employed to express extreme suffering, as a death by burning is one of the most horrible that can be conceived.
1 John 3:4
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
Those who have broken God’s laws will be punished. God is just and his judgment against all men will be just according to what they believed while they lived as well as what they did. Even many who consider themselves to be righteous will find themselves being cast into the lake of fire.
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
Just because this is a horrible place people will be sent to does not mean we should deny it exists.
The question then is “how can we avoid going there?”
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 10:9-10, 13
“That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” “For Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Saved from what? Saved from being cast into the lake of fire. If you believe and confess Jesus your name will be written into the book of life. Then it is game over and you win forever.
