Why would anyone want to live forever? Life is filled with pain, suffering, unmet needs, unrealized expectations, broken hearts, shattered dreams, random shootings and suicides. Someone would have to be crazy to want to live in a world filled with those things forever.
Well, maybe if there was a better place to spend eternity it might be nice.
Over the course of time in a beautiful and happy place I might forget the pain.
So…what is heaven like anyways?
The Bible says a lot about heaven yet no one I have talked to has been there. The Bible even says that this world will be remade into something new and different and that all the stars in heaven will be rolled up and put away on a shelf. Some people say we will have wings and play harps on clouds all the time. Really? That sounds so boring!
The Bible says we will be judges over the angels. Which angels? The angels who rebelled against God and followed Satan. Billions of angels will be judged by us and those we find guilty will be cast into the lake of fire that burns forever.
The Bible also says we will reign with God. We will be serving God forever. There will be some kind of work for us to do all the time (and no, the Bible does not tell us what the work will be). That will not be boring, ever. Jesus will be our shepherd and with direct access to him and guidance from him I am sure we will be kept just as busy as anyone will want to be. There will be constant celebration made by the angels and we can all join in that also.
The New Jerusalem will be the greatest city and there is where those who believe will have a place to stay. The law of gravity will be suspended. The city is 1,500 miles long, 1,500 miles wide and 1,500 miles high. There is enough room for Billions of people to live. God will be there of course and Jesus will shine enough for everyone to be able to see without the sun or moon. A river will flow through the middle of the city filled with crystal clear pure water. A tree of life will dwell on each side of the river and bear 12 kinds of fruit every month. The streets will be made of gold that looks like transparent glass. God who has been keeping each of our tears in a bottle will now wipe our tears away. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away and the hurts and pains of the past will not be remembered anymore…I am making everything new.
Sure, no one can know, see, hear or understand everything that heaven will be like. Many claim to have been there and returned and their stories are filled with wonder and awe. We will be able to know our ancestors all the way back to Adam and Eve.
There will be gardens for people to tend and grow things (not everyone wants to do this so not everyone will). Men and women can grow crops and make bread from the wheat they grow. They can grow grapes and make wine. There will be no rain, no oceans but there will be rivers and streams. Then again, there will be no need for people to eat but those who will want to may eat.
Are you kidding me? How can I know any of this is true?
1 Corinthians 1:25
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
Those who think they know it all should check themselves. There are a great many things we will never know for certain until we die. Other things we can be sure of; like knowing we will eventually die or that we have eternal life.
Remember him–before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well, and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
2 Corinthians 5:6, 8
Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.
We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
John 5:24 NKJ
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
1 John 5:11,13 NKJ
And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Those who believe in Jesus as their savior will live forever in heaven.
