When will Jesus return?
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only”
2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance”.
Matthew 24:3-14 “As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
2 Thessalonians 2:7-8 “For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.”
Not even Jesus knew the day nor the hour when he will return. God is longsuffering and he desires for everyone to hear the gospel message and then repent before Jesus returns. We see all around us the signs Jesus foretold that would occur before his return. We know the season of his return is closer now than ever before! Before his return to rule over the earth the wrath of God must be poured out upon the earth. A couple things must happen before then and other things will happen after those. First according to 2 Thessalonians there is a person now restraining the powers of darkness so that they cannot fully function. Once he is removed then the lawless one will be revealed.
The one restraining is the Holy Spirit of God. We who believe in Jesus have the Holy Spirit living in us and he will abide with us forever (John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever”). Therefore I believe that he cannot be removed unless the church (all believers around the world who have the Holy Spirit living in them) are also removed from the world (Raptured)!
When will this happen? (Acts 1:6-7 “Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.”) Matthew 24:32-33 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.” So then we can know the season when Jesus will return, even if we do not know the day or hour. We know it is getting closer to the time when we will be taken out of this world.
In the book of Leviticus seven feasts were laid out for the Jewish people to celebrate. These are but a shadow of the things of God. The first four feasts occur in the spring (Passover, Unleavened bread, First fruits, and Pentecost). These were fulfilled by Jesus during his fist coming. The final three feasts will be fulfilled when he returns (Trumpets, Atonement and Tabernacles).
The feasts were considered as parts of a whole with Passover starting one phase and Pentecost completing it. The next set starts with the feast of trumpets (Rosh HaShanah) which happens during a new moon sometime between September and October. New moons begin 29 and ½ days after the last one which means it could occur on the 29th or 30th with no one knowing for sure; which is why the Jews have two priests watch at sundown for the first sight of the new moon which would then announce the beginning of the feast.
Between the feast of trumpets and the feast of the Day of Atonement are seven days. Our God is not a God of coincidences so this has real meaning and I believe that this is a picture of the seven years the church will be celebrating the wedding feast in heaven before Jesus returns to reign over the earth. These seven years could be the seven years of the great tribulation mentioned in the book of Revelation.
I have no year for you, only the two possible months of the year when Jesus will come for us. There are some interesting theories for what years (or range of years) Jesus could return based upon the 490 years of Daniels prophecy and other biblical texts with variations for a 360 day Hebrew calendar and a 365.25 day Julian calendar. I have seen dates ranging from 2017 to 2047 (and one that said we are in the Jewish year 5776 and that Jesus will return 224 years from now in the year 6000).
